Boursin hails from France, and is now enjoyed in more than 35 countries on five continents. Suitable for breakfast, snacking, as an hors d'oeuvre, as a wonderful addition to any type of gathering, and for use in many recipes, Boursin is a cow's milk cheese that is off-white or yellowish in colour and has a soft creamy texture. The original Boursin was buttery and sweet in flavour, but it is now produced in several different savoury flavours that add to the cheese's natural taste. When prepared for sale, it is formed into cylindrical shapes and wrapped in foil. When asked to declare its origin for custom purposes when he created this cheese in Normandy in 1957, Cheesemaker Francois Boursin chose the name "Gournay" in honour of the small town where he grew up. If the label "All Natural Gournay Cheese" does not appear on the packaging, the product is not a genuine Boursin. Francois Boursin's initial flavoured creation, Garlic & Fine Herbs, the first flavoured fresh cheese to be sold thoughout France, was inspired by a long-standing traditional dish: fromage frais (fresh cheese) served with a bowl of fine herbs to allow each person to create his or her own personally seasoned cheese. A welcome addition to any cheese platter, it is made with cow's milk and cream, garlic, salt, pepper, parsley and chives. It is an ideal blend of fresh and herbaceous with a spark of garlic.
